Drawing As a Thinking Process - It's More Than Sketchnoting
Discover how simple drawings can be leveraged beyond capturing information and staying focused during lectures. We'll demonstrate how sketching and visual thinking is used by students to create and refine mental models, make thinking visible and problem solve. You'll leave with simple techniques and examples to employ tomorrow that enhance learning.

In this workshop, educators will take a step back from a focus on the final product and support students with the creative process. We ask students to design everyday. Posters, videos, graphics, and audio. We seldom help them with the design process. We simply hand them a rubric, and device and a due date and hope for the best. My goal is to support teachers in helping students take the ideas in their head, capture them on a surface (paper, tablet, dry erase board), and organize them in a way that leads to better solutions, stories, and outcomes.

Do We Need More Ed Tech?! (Or More Training?)
While blended learning offers great promise, there are no ‘silver bullets’ when it comes to adding technology to education. Change comes not from implementing technology but from helping all stakeholders use that tech to leverage educational change instead of the 'domestication of the technology to outdated practice. This help comes in the form of ongoing, content, and grade-level specific training, and providing staff with the time and resources need to adapt to the new possibilities opened by educational technology and blended learning. Implementation is not just showing teachers how to use technology, rather training them to teach with it. This session will briefly look at the body of research on educational technology implementation and the training requirements of ESSA. This will be followed by a discussion on the practical considerations for planning effective training for staff, students, and parents when implementing educational technology.

In this session, participants will learn how we used Flipgrid #Gridpals to connect our students with low-incidence disabilities to students like them from other places. We also will showcase our virtual scavenger hunt, which provided a unique opportunity for students with and without disabilities to come together, as equals, to work towards a common mission. Through these experiences, Students with Special Education Services focused on speech, language, social work, and mobility goals. Additionally, the experiences fostered the development of leadership and inclusion for all students.

How to Become a Student Data Privacy Warrior
Talk of student data privacy, cybersecurity, SOPPA, and scary news stories of major data leaks at school districts have been everywhere recently. While ensuring the security of school district infrastructure is undeniably the CTO’s responsibility, much can also be done at the teacher, coach, principal, and district office level to safeguard confidential student data against falling into the wrong hands. This presentation will explore: Why student data privacy matters; Federal laws surrounding student data privacy (particularly FERPA, COPPA, PPRA; Small steps individual employees can take to secure student data privacy; New Illinois student data privacy law (SOPPA) and how it affects teachers and the edtech platforms they use; Student data privacy often seems like a too-complicated mandate that is out of our hands, residing only in the office of the CTO, but armed with a simple understanding of the legal requirements regarding student data privacy and a few practical tips, anyone - at any level - can become a Student Data Privacy Warrior. ISTE Standards Addressed: ISTE Standards for Education Leaders, 4c: Protect privacy and security by ensuring that students and staff observe effective privacy and data management policies.

Just the Right Blend: Heart, Tech, & Action in the Blended Classroom
What does high-quality blended learning look like in action? In this workshop, we'll focus on three main areas of blended learning: (a) clear vision of successful blended experiences, (b) the power of mindfulness to influence learning, and (c) lesson design that requires students to get active. To do this, we'll refine our definition of blended learning into actionable strategies, then engage in modeled examples of learning paths to feel more confident about building flexible pathways in our classrooms. Next, we'll practice mindfulness activities together and plan for ways to weave SEL into our lessons as both stand-alone breaks from instruction and parallel skills within the academic learning itself. Finally, we'll play with action-based learning prompts that propel students into the learning path. Come with energy and an open mind; leave with samples, templates, experiences, collaborative ideas, and plans to refresh blended learning in your classrooms this school year.

Branching Growth: A Progressive and Differentiated Approach to Professional Learning
After years of sit-and-get PD for all staff on the same topic at the same time, the Freeport SD 145 C&I team, led by Dr. Julia Cloat, decided to shift to a format based on the diverse needs of our teaching staff inspired by the belief that "if you build it, they will come!"

Dividing professional learning into four progressions, or categories, staff were able to participate in learning that met their specific needs and interests aligned to personal, building, and district goals. The Branching Growth model resulted in a dramatic increase of staff participation in district institute days, learning cohorts outside of contract hours, and nearly 30% of staff signing up for an optional weeklong learning institute in the summer!

Attendees in this session will have the opportunity to experience the four progressions of the Branching Growth model and walk away with a plan on how to implement this in their buildings, districts, or organizations!

Reading: It’s Not Just For the Good Readers
Reading: the pivotal piece of the educational puzzle. Reading strategies are essential for all content and disciplinary areas of school and in life. Some students seem to master the “Art of Reading” at a young age and make it look easy, while others take more time and struggle to find the ease other students found. This session will focus on a reading approach that will work for ALL students to help give them the tools and practice to be a successful reader. This is not a curriculum; it will work with all types of reading and has a special penchant for non-fiction! The teachers that worked with this in our district, saw an increase of reading confidence and gains for the students. While this can work for subject areas, instructionally it is better instructed during an ELA class. Come see how you can incorporate this approach into your current classroom environment and make a difference with all students.

While students and educators were spread far and wide by the pandemic, many districts turned to Zoom to bridge to geographic gap. However, now that hybrid learning environments are becoming the norm, those same teachers are faced with a major hurdle - how can they effectively and clearly communicate with a webcam and headset while simultaneously interacting with a class of in-person students?  Enter Zoom ClassRoom, a new educational tool made for this moment. With it, educators can effectively flex between simultaneous learning environments without leaving any students behind. In this webinar, you'll hear from one educator who has harnessed Zoom ClassRoom to meet their students where they are, regardless of where they are.

Desmos is an incredible free tool to help build math and logical understanding in your classroom. Learn the basics of where to start with the Desmos Graphing Calculator and how to incorporate it into your teaching! If you are already familiar with Desmos, don't worry, we will step it up and explore the amazing Activity resources that are available to you online... AND how YOU can make your OWN ACTIVITES!

During the pandemic, the Algebra 2 team at my school turned to creating interactive and thought-provoking projects to assess student understanding instead of relying on traditional test grades. We have learned an incredible amount of information since our first basic project during the fall and we want to share that excitement and passion with other teachers who might be interested as well!

Desmos and their Activity Builder are versatile tools that can be used in more than just a math classroom. The power and interconnectivity between the Desmos Graphing Calculator and all the different Activity Builder Components is truly mind blowing! Science teachers can definitely use Desmos! Coding and Computers classes can use Desmos! Our Scholastic Bowl Team uses Desmos for practicing. Junior High and Grade Schools can benefit from Desmos just as much as High Schools can.

The only limitation for using Desmos is what's in your imagination. #CreateGreatThings

CANCELED - I've Made All This Digital Content. Now What? - Flipping Your Classroom
Have you created  A LOT of digital content during the last couple school years? If so, then you are ready to flip your classroom! It's the next logical step in your technology integration. The time is now! Join us for some EdTech inspiration and motivation as we discuss getting past the barriers to flipping your curriculum.

The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model where the traditional lecture and homework elements are reversed. Pre-recorded digital content is viewed before class. In-class time is repurposed so students can inquire about lecture content, apply their knowledge, and participate in hands-on activities. By reversing the traditional lecture and homework elements and integrating engaged-learning activities, educators can transition their class from a teacher-centered to a learner-centered environment. Making this transition will completely change the dynamics of the classroom and revolutionize your curriculum.

Come discover the possibilities offered by the flipped classroom model as we explore the technology that will make implementation in your classroom a breeze.

More Time for Student Engagement: Inside the Flipped Classroom
This session shows how the flipped classroom model can give you more classroom time to work with students by removing direct instruction (lecture) from classroom time. This time can be used to apply information, work with individual students, provide social and emotional learning supports (SEL), and allow for collaboration time. This is especially important with equity, remote & hybrid learning & demonstrates a better use of synchronous & asynchronous instructional time to improve learning outcomes.

This session will include for main areas: 1) Today’s New Teaching ‘Realities’; 2) ESSA and Blended Learning; 3) Flipped Basics and Beyond; and 4) Remember your ‘Why’ & Practical Ideas.
