One Size Does Not Fit All – Chrome Apps and Extensions to Support Universal Design for Learning
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn (CAST). This engaging, hands-on presentation will introduce participants to Chrome apps and extensions through the lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The three basic components of UDL, multiple means of engagement, multiple means of representation, and multiple means expression will be defined. Free to low-cost technology resources to support all three areas will be demonstrated. Participants will leave with exciting ways for all students to learn and show what they know!

Drawing As a Thinking Process - It's More Than Sketchnoting

In this workshop, educators will take a step back from a focus on the final product and support students with the creative process. We ask students to design everyday. Posters, videos, graphics, and audio. We seldom help them with the design process. We simply hand them a rubric, and device and a due date and hope for the best. My goal is to support teachers in helping students take the ideas in their head, capture them on a surface (paper, tablet, dry erase board), and organize them in a way that leads to better solutions, stories, and outcomes.

Do We Need More Ed Tech?! (Or More Training?)
While blended learning offers great promise, there are no ‘silver bullets’ when it comes to adding technology to education. Change comes not from implementing technology but from helping all stakeholders use that tech to leverage educational change instead of the 'domestication of the technology to outdated practice. This help comes in the form of ongoing, content, and grade-level specific training, and providing staff with the time and resources need to adapt to the new possibilities opened by educational technology and blended learning. Implementation is not just showing teachers how to use technology, rather training them to teach with it. This session will briefly look at the body of research on educational technology implementation and the training requirements of ESSA. This will be followed by a discussion on the practical considerations for planning effective training for staff, students, and parents when implementing educational technology.

Talk of student data privacy, cybersecurity, SOPPA, and scary news stories of major data leaks at school districts have been everywhere recently. While ensuring the security of school district infrastructure is undeniably the CTO’s responsibility, much can also be done at the teacher, coach, principal, and district office level to safeguard confidential student data against falling into the wrong hands. This presentation will explore: Why student data privacy matters; Federal laws surrounding student data privacy (particularly FERPA, COPPA, PPRA; Small steps individual employees can take to secure student data privacy; New Illinois student data privacy law (SOPPA) and how it affects teachers and the edtech platforms they use; Student data privacy often seems like a too-complicated mandate that is out of our hands, residing only in the office of the CTO, but armed with a simple understanding of the legal requirements regarding student data privacy and a few practical tips, anyone - at any level - can become a Student Data Privacy Warrior. Branching Growth: A Progressive and Differentiated Approach to Professional Learning
After years of sit-and-get PD for all staff on the same topic at the same time, the Freeport SD 145 C&I team, led by Dr. Julia Cloat, decided to shift to a format based on the diverse needs of our teaching staff inspired by the belief that "if you build it, they will come!"

Dividing professional learning into four progressions, or categories, staff were able to participate in learning that met their specific needs and interests aligned to personal, building, and district goals. The Branching Growth model resulted in a dramatic increase of staff participation in district institute days, learning cohorts outside of contract hours, and nearly 30% of staff signing up for an optional weeklong learning institute in the summer!

Attendees in this session will have the opportunity to experience the four progressions of the Branching Growth model and walk away with a plan on how to implement this in their buildings, districts, or organizations!
